5 Days / 4 Nights Mount Meru

Mount Meru is situated within the Arusha National Park (an area of about 137 sq. km) and is 45 kilometers from Arusha. It has a wide range of habitats, from alkaline crater lakes and swamps to mountain forests and alpine deserts. Mt Meru is the fourth highest mountain in Africa and can be climbed in three or four days. Accommodation is in huts. Wild animals are plentiful and include buffalo, elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebras, leopards, waterbucks, hyenas, duikers, baboons, and almost 400 species of birds. The mountain is most well known for the beautiful black and white colobus monkeys which swing from branches in the tall rainforest trees and the shy duikers. On this climb, in addition to your trekking team, you will also have an armed ranger to ensure your safety. We recommend you do this climb to help you acclimatize for your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure. After descending, you will spend only one night in either Arusha or Moshi before starting your second climb. Any longer than this and the benefits of acclimatization will be lost. The Arusha National Park also makes an ideal day game drive or pleasant few hours walk.

Day 1
Arrival Day in either Arusha or Moshi
On arrival, you are personally met at the airport by one of our representatives and transferred to your chosen hotel in Arusha or Moshi. In the afternoon there is a full briefing with the climbs manager and your guide. Dinner is included. Mount Meru is located in Arusha. If you are only climbing Mt Meru we recommend you opt to stay the night in Arusha, not Moshi.

Day 2: After breakfast, we leave your hotel at 8:30 a.m and drive to Momella gate to register. We start the climb and stop for a picnic lunch before reaching the first hut called Miriakamba. We have dinner here and overnight in huts - Miriakamba hut (3 ½ hrs walk).

Day 3: After breakfast, we proceed with a climb to the second base called Saddle Huts. This is steeper than the day before but is a short 2 ½ hour trek. During the afternoon, we will take a walk to Little Meru Peak which offers views of the main summit. We then enjoy dinner and head to bed.

Day 4: Waking up at midnight, we have a hot drink before starting the climb up to Mount Meru Peak. We reach the summit for sunrise and then return back down to Saddle Huts for a full breakfast. There we take a short rest and leave Saddle Huts and descend down to Momella gate via first hut (Miriakamba). On the way back we will pass through Momella Lakes and enjoy some game viewing before returning to your hotel.

Day 5: Arusha or Moshi
Breakfast
Departure day. If you would like to book additional nights please inform us as early as possible. We will arrange for you to be transferred to the airport or you may join a Kili Base Adventure safari and continue your holiday with us and explore the famous game reserves of Tanzania or perhaps attempt Mt Kilimanjaro.
